Security tips – when you’re at home or away

Taking some common sense precautions can ensure peace of mind that your home and belongings are protected, when you’re at home or away. Check out our virtual home security tour.

Before you go away

  • Ask a neighbour or relative to bring in the bin for you.
  • Cancel subscriptions and newspaper deliveries.
  • Ask a neighbour or relative to park their car in your driveway.
  • Notify your local police station that you are going away. Give them your mobile number or another number where they can contact you if necessary.
  • Ask a neighbour or friend to collect your mail. Don’t leave tools or garden implements outside for the thief to break in to your home.
  • Plug in a few timers for lights at different points around the home. Then when the lounge room timer goes off, the bedroom or kitchen light goes on, creating the illusion of movement in your house.
  • Mow the lawn and tidy around the outside of the house before leaving.
  • Trim bushes and shrubs so neighbours can see your house.
  • Hang some old clothes on the washing line.
  • Install a monitored home security system. Police no longer attend to triggered alarms unless there is confirmation that an offence has taken place.

If you live alone

  • Leave a pair of work boots or large runners lying around the front or back entrances.
  • Draw curtains or blinds at night so thieves can’t get a ‘sneak preview’ of your contents.
  • Use a remote handheld device to activate your monitored home security system from outside or in an emergency.

When you’re working in the garden or backyard

  • Don’t leave tools or garden implements lying around
  • Close the garage door so would-be burglars can’t see what you have on offer
  • Don’t leave empty boxes from new purchases outside for collection – these are a giveaway of brand new appliances in your home. Dispose of empty boxes at the tip.

Fire prevention

  • Install smoke alarms.
  • Regularly check smoke alarms and vacuum or dust around them.
  • Ensure deadlocks are released when you’re at home.
  • Install a properly maintained fire extinguisher and fire blanket.
  • Prepare a home escape plan and practice it.
  • Connect the smoke alarm to a monitored home security system so help is on its way without having to use the telephone.
